8 Reasons to Craft With Your Kids

When I was at the library reading & craft time last week I heard another mom say, “I hate it when they do a craft, we usually leave before the craft starts, ugh!” I couldn’t believe my ears. Why wouldn’t you want to do crafts with your kids, especially free ones that have already been planned out for you?

However, that one mom’s comment got me thinking and is what spurred this post.  I know I personally love doing crafts with my kids and feel bad that I haven’t been able to do as many with my son since my daughter was born this past year.

8 REASONS TO CRAFT WITH YOU KIDS

Reason #1: Crafting further develops fine motor skills. I am amazed at the kids who can’t use scissors when we go to craft time and more amazed at the moms that don’t allow their children to use scissors, supervised of course.

Reason #2: Crafts and art projects allow for an outlet for creativity. They allow children to express themselves in a creative way, channeling that creative energy and even further developing artistic skills.
Reason #3: Crafting is a great way for children to learn how to focus and sit still for that matter. It takes patience to complete an entire craft and teaching kids to focus and be patient are great skills for years to come.
Reason #4: My favorite reason to craft is for the Holidays. It just so happens that crafting during the holidays is a great way to teach children about tradition, your faith, and your heritage. Crafts during the holidays aren’t just cute but they enhance your children’s overall holiday experience.
Reason #5: A lot of children are crafting before they can actually speak their native language fluently. By doing so can actually help learn to speak quicker and a with a wider vocabulary: crayon, paint, color, paper, cut, glue, etc.
Reason #6: Offline time. So many children are attached to their tablets, devices or TV as soon as they walk in the door because it is just easy. Getting your children either crafting or outside are two other great ways to lower the screen time.
Reason #7: Bonding time. Crafting is a great way to bond with your children. It gives you one-on-one time with them which makes them feel important, ultimately taking more interest in the craft because of that one-on-one time. While your children’s hands are busy crafting, it allows a time for them to talk to you about other things and open up to you which only can bring your bond closer.
Reason #8: Displaying their art gives them a positive self-esteem.  One of the projects I am currently working on is an entire artwork wall for my kids in their separate hallway. Right now they are all over the kitchen bulletin board, which for now is fine. My son loves looking at his artwork and talking about when he made it, what it is and so on. I love how excited he gets when he sees me pinning it up on the wall!
If you think you don’t have the time to craft or the money for that matter, believe me, you do. The simplest crafts are out there. If you aren’t much for crafting, look to your local community center or library. Especially during the holidays, most communities do crafts for children during this time. Most of all, learn to enjoy this process with your children. You will look back at the memories made and be glad you did. Enjoy!
