Resolutions vs. Goals

The time is here, we’ve entered the New Year once again. Everyone is heading back to the gym, declaring all the things, but do you know how many people actually stick with a “Resolution” they create? The truth of the matter is that 60% of us declare them, but only 8% of us stick with them. Why is that? Continue reading to find out…

RESOLUTION VS. GOAL

Resolution: a firm decision to do or not to do something. Goal: the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. … Goals provide a direction to follow to achieve the desired outcome. Goals involve intention setting, planning, preparing, and taking REALISTIC action.

Can you see the difference? Can you see why most of our New Year’s Resolutions fail? In my personal opinion, unless a goal is set and actionable steps are created, a person will not succeed. With a Goal, your desire is greater because you set clearer expectations and are making a lifestyle/habit change, not just a blanket statement of something you want.

EXAMPLES OF RESOLUTIONS

“I want to work out every day for at least 20 minutes.”

“I want to eat healthier this year!”

“I’m want to get to bed earlier every night.”

“I’m want to Focus on my building my business up in 2020.”

“I want to lose weight this year.”

EXAMPLES OF GOALS

“I’m going to go to the gym 3 mornings a week & re-join my running group that meets on Wednesday Nights.”

“I’m going to cut out dairy, added sugar and the creamer in my coffee for 30 days to see how I feel and continue as needed.”

“I’m going to get to bed on time during the weeknights so I get me 7-8 hrs of sleep.”

“I’m going to triple my Income in 2020”

“I’m going to lose 10 pounds by February by working out consistently & sticking to my macros.”

GOAL SETTING

Have you ever heard of the S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting method? It stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time Based. Setting goals is so important in life, but just be sure to be realistic. I personally set Small, Medium & Large Goals or 30 Day, 60 Day+ and 1 Year+. It is important to define what each means to you so you can correctly set your own expectations. There is nothing more frustrating than setting a goal you’ll never reach within the timeline you’ve created for yourself.

DREAM BIG

This doesn’t mean you can’t DREAM BIG, because I truly believe in the Power of Positive Affirmations and to put it all out into the universe! I am just realistic about it if that makes sense? For example, my 60-day goal is to promote Director in my company. Still challenging, but also very realistic and where I need to be on track to the rest of my goals. My 6-month goal is to then promote to the Next Level and 6 months after that to do the same. Getting to the last level in 2020 from where I am now is for sure a BIG, BIG Goal, but again, doable if I put in the work.

WORK HARD

The other reason why most people don’t stick to their “Resolutions” is that they don’t put in the work. Anything worth anything is HARD and takes WORK. Simple as that. Stick with it.
