How I Got Out of My "Mom" Jeans

Being a Mom is A Blessing

There is no greater miracle in life than having a baby! I love being a mom and everything that comes with it, even the unwanted weight, unwanted blemishes, scars, etc. With that said, I want to be the best mom I can be. In order to do that, I need to be healthy. For me, being healthy is eating right, exercising regularly and presenting myself in a positive manner. I want my children to be proud of me as they grow up, I want them to see someone who set a good example for them along the way.

Mom Jeans

There is no shame in having “Mom” jeans. Everyone has them. They are those jeans that you need to wear postpartum, jeans you need to wear in order to get through a time where you may be carrying a little extra weight still. Hey, this day in age, you may not even have any jeans for your current body, maybe you are just living in leggings like I did after my second baby. I only call them mom jeans because they are a pair (size) of jeans you want to leave behind so you can get into your “skinny” jeans. Your “skinny” jeans are those jeans that make you feel good. They may be an old pair you haven’t been able to fit into for awhile or just simply the jeans you could fit into before your babies.

How to Get Out of Your “Mom” Jeans

Step 1: Get Moving. With your doctor’s ok, after baby, get back to your normal workout routine. If you worked out before and during your pregnancy, you can usually get back to some light activity within a week or so of delivering (again, consult with your doctor first). For me, I started out by doing some stretching, taking walks and 10-minute low-impact workouts. It got me moving and outside which was great for my overall mood. If you are way past the newborn stage and still in your “mom” jeans, that is ok too. Make today the day you start. Start off slow, listen to your body and just GET MOVING each day! See my blog post about 5 great workouts for getting lean or visit my Fitness & Exercise section for even more tips.

Fitness Journal

Step 2: Keep a Food Diary and or Fitness Journal. You can’t get your body back by eating fast food and drinking soda every day, well most of us can’t anyway. In order to keep up with your kids, you need enough energy to do so. You get energy from the food (fuel) you put into your body and by exercising. Make small changes in your diet each week until you are at a place you don’t have to write it down anymore and it is a way of life for you. Food prep is my number one recommendation for all busy moms. It will force you to make better choices. It may not feel like it now, but you will get to that point. Plus, your diary is always there, if you get off track, just start writing it all down again so you can see where the issues are. Most likely, you will know though.
Step 3: You Don’t Have to Clean Your Plate. When you were little, did your mom ever say, “you can’t get up from the table until your plate is clean!”? Well, I know my mom always said that to us. I still blame her for making me feel like we have to eat everything. Of course, wasting food is not ideal, so try to take the right portion from the start and you can indeed clean your plate. But know, it is ok if you don’t. Eat until you are full, not until the plate is clean.

Step 4: Stay Hydrated. There are so many benefits to drinking plenty of water. Your skin will be healthier, your liver will thank you and your metabolism will be able to work more efficiently and promote weight loss. Experts say you should drink half your body weight in water (in ounces) each day. You should drink an additional 8 oz for each workout you do and caffeinated drink you intake as well.
Step 5: Get Your Mind Right. Losing weight and eating healthy is always a good choice. However, if you aren’t mentally prepared for the journey you are about to embark on, you won’t see the results you want or simply won’t be happy at the end of it. Take the time to Reflect on where you’ve been, Educate yourself so you have the right tools to be successful and Grow into the person you desire.

My Journey

My journey looked different after each child. I was able to lose the weight faster with my first and overall felt a lot better quicker, both mentally and physically. With my second, I struggled with both. I have lost the weight about 6 months postpartum, but now at 14 months postpartum, I still have some tightening to do. Mentally I am stronger this time around though. I think that is because I knew what to expect and didn’t expect too much too soon.

My New Jeans

So what type of jeans have I fell in love with after I got my pre-baby body back? The Sam Boyfriend Cut Silver Jeans. They are so comfy for everyday use while chasing kids, yet trendy enough to be up with the fashion trends. They come in 2 or 3 different washes, I have the dark and light wash I believe.

Your Journey

I joke about the whole “mom” jean thing, but in all seriousness, I truly hope you reach your goals, both physically and mentally. Be the best version of yourself, not only for you but for your children and your family. Most all be happy and healthy, there is no one size fits all. Your children deserve to have a healthy mom and they deserve to have you around for a long time. Best wishes on your unique journey.
