Tools to Kickstart Your Fitness Goals

YOUR GOALS

Let me start by saying everyone’s fitness goals are different, they should be and that is ok. Some people simply want to feel healthy, others want more muscle tone, some want to lose weight or inches. No matter your goals or other peoples goals, let’s be supportive of one another. The fact that you have fitness goals is huge. It means you care about your body, your health, and your overall well-being.

TOOL #2: GET THE RIGHT GEAR

No, you do not need special clothes or gear to meet your fitness goals. However, with that said, motivation is sometimes fueled by how we look or feel. I know when I go to the gym, I like to have matching workout clothes, clothes that make me feel good and of course shoes that give support and are going to be safe for the workout I will be doing. TOOL #3: GYM VS. HOME GYM

Simply said, you need a place to workout. If you aren’t motivated enough to workout at home, find a gym you can join instead. I personally do a little of both in order to ensure I’ll workout daily.
If you are going to workout at a gym, make sure you don’t just pick the cheapest option, it is important to find a gym you feel comfortable at, one that has everything you’ll need and one you’ll actually attend. The reason I like the local YMCA I attend is that it has a pool, has child watch, has classes and is near my home. All of which are very important to me.
For my gym at home, I recommend a handful of things in order to be successful; something for cardio, free weight or kettlebell set, yoga mat, and a TV or Computer. I personally have the following: elliptical, free weights, yoga mat, pilates reformer machine, computer, and TV.

TOOL #4: A PLAN

It may seem silly to plan out your workouts, but it really is important. The more time you commit to this journey, the more likely you’ll stick with it for the long run. I have a schedule I stick to each week. On Sunday’s when I look at my week ahead, if something will interrupt that schedule, I am sure to re-organize things to make room for fitness each day. Put your workouts on a calendar even so it feels more like something you have to do instead of something you might do. Once you do it for awhile, you’ll no longer feel this way and you’ll even begin to look forward to your workouts like I do.

TOOL #5: SET MEASURABLE GOALS

Finally, before you get started, be sure to set measurable goals. No fitness journey can begin unless you are clear on what the goals are. Start off small and continue to build upon the original goal. If you create too lofty of a goal, you’ll get discouraged quickly and quit.
I recently sat down with a client of mine to help her lay out goals, food prep ideas, a fitness strategy, etc. She said to me, “I haven’t started yet because I can only do 5-10 minutes on my elliptical at a time, and that won’t do anything.” I told her, “yes it will and you need to start somewhere.” Do you know, after only 4-5 days of doing 10 minutes per day on her elliptical and eating healthy, she has already lost 7 pounds…yay! Now on her second week, she has worked up to 15 minutes on her elliptical (with one break). Progress!
So friends, know that we all need to start somewhere, but starting is the important part.
